Fake Doctor’ Scandal Rocks Nigerian Medical Association As Enugu Branch Blasts National Leadership
Confusion Deepens as MDCN Disowns Alleged Doctor at the Centre of Controversy
A major scandal is currently rocking the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), as its Enugu State branch has openly condemned the national leadership for allegedly recognizing an individual described as a “fake doctor.” The controversy, which has shaken the integrity of the prestigious medical body, revolves around one Mr. Nnaemeka Victor, who reportedly has no record with the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN)—the sole regulatory body authorized to license medical practitioners in the country.
According to reports, Mr. Nnaemeka had dragged the Enugu West branch of the NMA to court as far back as 2022, challenging certain internal decisions of the association. However, investigations have now revealed that his name does not exist in the official MDCN database—a shocking discovery that has cast serious doubts on his legitimacy as a medical professional.
In a statement released by the Enugu branch of the NMA, the doctors expressed deep disappointment over what they described as “a gross display of irresponsibility” by the national leadership, led by Prof. Bala Mohammed Audu, for allegedly siding with a person who is not recognized as a doctor under Nigerian law.
> “It is both embarrassing and unethical for the national officers of our association to identify with a person who the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria has confirmed not to be a registered medical practitioner. This undermines the integrity of our noble profession and disrespects every legitimate doctor in Nigeria,” the statement read in part.
The case in question, which was filed at the Agbani Judicial Division of the Enugu State High Court, has reportedly been struck out due to “want of diligence and abandonment”. However, sources allege that the NMA’s national leadership has continued to treat the case as “ongoing,” a move that has deepened internal rifts within the association.
Legal experts in Enugu have described the development as both “curious and concerning,” especially given the sensitive nature of professional regulation in the medical field.
> “The court has already dismissed the matter, so for anyone to continue referring to it as active raises questions about motive and transparency,” said a legal practitioner familiar with the case.
Adding more fuel to the controversy, the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) has officially clarified that “no record exists in its register bearing the name Dr. Nnaemeka Victor.” This revelation has sparked outrage among many NMA members, who are now demanding an internal audit of how such an individual could have gained access to or recognition from the association in the first place.
Medical observers say this scandal could become one of the most damaging in the NMA’s history, as it not only questions the leadership’s judgment but also exposes weaknesses in the association’s verification processes.
Within the Enugu medical community, many doctors are reportedly losing confidence in the national leadership’s ability to maintain the association’s credibility. Some have accused the top hierarchy of politicizing professional matters and neglecting due process.
> “This is not just about one fake doctor,” a senior physician in Enugu said. “It’s about the image of the Nigerian Medical Association. If we can’t protect our own professional standards, then who will?”
As calls for transparency grow louder, several members have urged the NMA to immediately convene an emergency disciplinary committee to investigate the entire episode. There are also demands for Prof. Bala Mohammed Audu and his team to publicly clarify their position and take corrective action to restore the association’s battered reputation.
Meanwhile, the Enugu State branch insists it will not remain silent until justice and professionalism prevail.
> “We have sworn an oath to uphold medical ethics, not to condone deceit or fraud,” the Enugu NMA leadership declared. “The medical profession must remain a sanctuary for truth, not a playground for impostors.”
As the scandal continues to unfold, observers warn that the NMA must act swiftly to regain public trust and prevent the erosion of confidence in Nigeria’s medical system.
