AGULU, ANAMBRA STATE — The atmosphere was calm yet charged with civic enthusiasm on Saturday morning as former Governor of Anambra State and 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Mr. Peter Obi, cast his vote in the ongoing Anambra governorship election.
Mr. Obi arrived at his polling unit — Polling Unit 019, Umudim Akasi Agulu 2, Ward 8 — early in the day, accompanied by a few aides and supporters. He was warmly received by residents who hailed him for his leadership legacy and continued advocacy for good governance in Nigeria.
After exchanging pleasantries with officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and interacting briefly with other voters, the former governor joined the queue to exercise his franchise. The process was orderly and peaceful, reflecting the growing maturity of Nigeria’s electoral system in the region.
Speaking to journalists shortly after casting his ballot, Obi commended both INEC and security agencies for what he described as a “peaceful and transparent process.” He called on the people of Anambra to come out in large numbers and vote according to their conscience, emphasizing that “voting remains the most powerful tool for citizens to influence the direction of governance.”
“I am happy to see the peaceful conduct of this election so far. My appeal to our people is to remain law-abiding and committed to the democratic process. It is through the ballot that we can determine the kind of leadership we deserve,” Obi said.
He also clarified his position regarding the ongoing governorship contest, stressing that although he is a proud member of the Labour Party and has voted for his party’s candidate, he is not on the ballot and has no personal stake in the outcome beyond his civic duty.
“I have served as the governor of Anambra State, and I left that office years ago. My focus now is on Nigeria’s future. Whoever emerges as the next governor, I will congratulate and support them because Anambra’s progress is bigger than any political interest,” he stated.
On his political plans, Obi reaffirmed his intention to continue engaging in national politics, hinting at another run for the presidency in 2027.
“I remain committed to building a better Nigeria. My political focus is now on national governance, and by 2027, Nigerians will again have the opportunity to make that choice,” he said, adding that the performance of any candidate in the state election would not determine his own political prospects.
Across Anambra, voter turnout has been encouraging, with reports of early arrivals at polling units and relatively smooth accreditation and voting processes. The governorship election, which spans 5,718 polling units across the 21 local government areas of the state, has attracted the attention of national observers, foreign monitors, and civil society organizations.
Security presence remains strong in all localities, with police, military, and paramilitary personnel ensuring that the exercise proceeds without disruption.
As the voting continues and collation progresses, Nigerians watch closely — not only to see who will emerge as the next governor of Anambra State but also to observe how the process reflects the evolving landscape of Nigeria’s democratic practice.
Mr. Peter Obi’s presence at the polling unit — calm, composed, and inspiring — once again underscored his enduring influence on the state’s political scene and his broader message of integrity, participation, and hope for a better Nigeria.
