Kidnapping in Imo State: Philanthropist Okwuruola Freed After Ransom Payment
A dramatic incident unfolded in Umuaka, Imo State, Nigeria, where renowned philanthropist Emmanuel Okoh, popularly known as Okwuruola, was kidnapped on July 31, 2025. Okwuruola, a well-known socialist and philanthropist from Enugu State, Southeast Nigeria, had traveled to Imo State with his team to attend to a sick individual whose medical treatment he had helped fundraise for.
According to reports, Okwuruola was double-crossed by the kidnappers, who demanded a ransom in exchange for his freedom. After paying millions of naira, Okwuruola regained his freedom. The philanthropist's kidnapping highlights the growing insecurity in Imo State, where kidnappings and attacks have been rampant since the Supreme Court declared Senator Hope Uzodimma the governor.
The insecurity in Imo State has been attributed to various factors, including alleged government backing of IPOB members' persecution. Many communities have been sacked, thousands of youths killed, and communities burnt by Nigerian army members claiming to search for IPOB members. The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has accused the federal government of supporting Governor Hope Uzodimma in sponsoring insecurity in Imo State.
The Imo State Police Command has been working to combat crime and insecurity in the state. Recent operations have led to the arrest of 147 suspects linked to kidnapping, armed robbery, and terrorism. Police operatives have also recovered various types of ammunition and rescued kidnapped victims. In a recent operation, police killed seven suspected terrorists and recovered ₦3 million in cash, believed to be ransom money .
The kidnapping of Okwuruola and the ongoing insecurity in Imo State have raised concerns about the safety of citizens and the effectiveness of security agencies. Many are calling for increased vigilance and more effective measures to combat crime and ensure the security of lives and property in the state.
Impact on Philanthropic Work
Okwuruola's kidnapping also raises concerns about the safety of philanthropists and humanitarian workers in Nigeria. As a well-known figure in Enugu State, Okwuruola's work has made a significant impact on many lives. His kidnapping highlights the need for increased protection and support for individuals and organizations engaged in philanthropic work, particularly in areas plagued by insecurity .
