The Labour Party has taken a significant step towards expanding its membership base with the launch of an online membership registration and revalidation application. This innovative move aims to increase the party's membership size to 20 million, solidifying its position as a formidable force in Nigerian politics .
According to the party's National Chairman, Barrister Julius Abure, the online registration portal is part of the party's efforts to demonstrate that it is still possible to form and conduct democratic culture and values in Nigeria. The party's vision is to build a strong economy that would benefit all Nigerians, and its mission is to entrench democratic culture and values.
The party has also released its congress timetable, outlining the schedule for ward, local government, and state congresses. Ward congresses will commence between February and March 2025, where 17 offices will be contested, including Chairman, Vice Chairman, Secretary, and Woman Leader. Local government congresses will follow between April and May 2025, with 21 offices up for grabs, while state congresses will take place between June and July 2025, featuring 29 contested offices.
In preparation for these congresses, the party has directed all members to revalidate their membership, while new members are encouraged to register online. The online registration will update the Ward register ahead of the congresses. Interested members aspiring to hold offices at the ward, local government, or state levels should commence necessary preparations.
Additionally, the party has approved the restructuring of the Directorate of Mobilization and Integration, commending its success in opening up the party to Nigerians. The party has also created the Directorate of International and Diaspora Affairs to manage party members abroad and facilitate their participation in congresses.
The Electoral Reform Committee, Political Education Committee, and State Elders Council will also be inaugurated to pursue holistic electoral reforms in Nigeria and mobilize and conscientize party members. The Labour Party is determined to reposition itself and make it the biggest political brand in readiness for future political engagements.
The party's National Chairman, Barrister Julius Abure, emphasized the need for electoral reform, stating that the Labour Party was a major victim in the 2023 general election. He also highlighted the importance of political education, noting that leadership alone is not the major challenge facing Nigeria, but rather the mindset of the people.
With these developments, the Labour Party is poised to play a significant role in shaping Nigeria's political landscape in the coming years.
