US rap superstar Nicki Minaj took her advocacy to the diplomatic stage on Tuesday as she visited the United Nations headquarters, delivering an emotional appeal over what she described as the escalating persecution of Christians in Nigeria.
Minaj, who was invited by US Ambassador to the UN Mike Waltz, participated in a high-level discussion on global religious freedom and what the US government is doing to protect vulnerable faith communities worldwide.
During her remarks, Minaj expressed gratitude to former US President Donald Trump for prioritising religious liberty on the international agenda. She praised his administration’s continued efforts “to defend Christians in Nigeria, to combat extremism, and to bring a stop to violence against those who simply want to exercise their natural right to freedom of religion or belief.”
The award-winning artist said her travels across the world have opened her eyes to the deep role religion plays in shaping culture, identity, and community. For this reason, she said, it is troubling to see that faith “is under attack in way too many places,” naming Nigeria as a pressing example.
Minaj highlighted the suffering of Christian communities in parts of Nigeria, saying many are being targeted by violent groups, forced from their homes, and in some cases killed. She said churches have been burned, families displaced, and entire towns left in fear “simply because of how they pray.”
“We don’t have to share the same beliefs in order to respect one another,” she said. “No one should ever feel unsafe because of their faith.”
She stressed that her call for protection is not an attempt to divide people along religious lines but rather to uphold a fundamental human right. “Protecting Christians in Nigeria is not about taking sides,” she said. “It is about uniting humanity.”
Minaj also condemned attacks on any place of worship — whether church or mosque — saying such incidents should concern the entire world. “When one’s church, mosque, or place of worship is destroyed, everyone’s heart should break just a little bit,” she added.
The rapper expressed hope that her appearance at the UN would inspire greater global commitment toward defending religious freedom and supporting communities living in fear. She urged world leaders and international institutions to work together to ensure that every person can believe, worship, and live in peace.
“I hope this discussion will encourage deeper solidarity,” she concluded, “so that people everywhere can enjoy the right to live in safety, with their faith respected and their dignity protected.”
