A section of the well-known Kayat Restaurant on Polo Road in Maiduguri, Borno State, was on Sunday engulfed by fire, sparking panic among residents and passersby.
The incident, which began around 11 a.m., sent thick smoke into the air before men of the Borno State Fire Service, supported by operatives of the state police command, arrived to contain the situation.
Police spokesperson Nahum Daso confirmed ongoing rescue operations, saying officers from the GRA Police Division were on ground assisting firefighters.
“Our team from the GRA police station is currently there, providing assistance to the Fire Service,” he said.
Eyewitness Umar Abdullahi told Glintnews that a large portion of the facility was still burning when he passed by.
“A significant part of the place was still catching fire, but fire service personnel were doing their best to put it out,” he said.
Another resident, Martina Joseph, noted that emergency personnel acted swiftly to keep people safe and control traffic around the scene.
“The situation was professionally handled. They controlled the movement of cars and people. From what I saw, only the building and maybe some materials were affected,” she said.
The actual cause of the fire is yet to be determined.
Efforts to reach Fati Fali Murtala, spokesperson of the Federal Fire Service in the state, were unsuccessful as of press time.
This incident comes months after a similar fire outbreak destroyed an electronics shop at Monday Market in Maiduguri, resulting in multimillion-naira losses. Police had deployed officers to the scene then to prevent looting during the emergency.
