The Omituntun Initiative in the Diaspora (OID) has lauded Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, for what it described as a prompt and decisive response to the recent abduction of students and teachers in Ogbomoso, saying the governor’s actions demonstrate strong leadership in the face of growing security concerns.

The group also threw its weight behind the governor’s newly signed Executive Order 001 of 2026, describing it as a strategic step toward strengthening local security architecture, improving coordination among security agencies, and enhancing the protection of lives and property across Oyo State.

In a statement issued on Wednesday by its spokesperson, Ayotomiwa Adebayo, the diaspora-based organization said it had closely monitored developments surrounding the abduction incident and remained encouraged by the swift intervention of the state government and security agencies.

According to the group, Governor Makinde’s response reflects the kind of proactive governance required at a time when communities across Nigeria continue to grapple with insecurity, banditry, kidnapping, and other violent crimes.

"At a time when the nation is confronting complex and evolving security challenges, Governor Makinde’s swift response demonstrates the firm, responsible, and decisive leadership needed to protect citizens and restore public confidence," the statement read.

The group noted that the kidnapping of students and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area sparked widespread concern among Nigerians both at home and in the diaspora, underscoring the vulnerability of educational institutions and the urgent need for enhanced security measures.

Expressing sympathy and solidarity with the affected families, school communities, and residents of Oyo State, OID stressed that every available resource should be deployed to ensure the safe and immediate release of all victims.

The organization further commended the efforts of the Nigeria Police Force, local security operatives, and other law enforcement agencies involved in the ongoing rescue mission. It urged security personnel to intensify operations aimed at tracking down the perpetrators and dismantling criminal networks responsible for such attacks.

According to the group, the fight against kidnapping and banditry must go beyond arresting perpetrators to include identifying and prosecuting sponsors, financiers, informants, and collaborators who enable criminal activities.

"Those behind these criminal acts, including sponsors and collaborators, must be identified and brought to justice regardless of their social, political, or economic status. Accountability is essential to ending the cycle of violence and insecurity," the statement added.

The diaspora group warned that the increasing frequency of kidnappings, attacks on schools, and violent crimes across various parts of the country continues to undermine national development, discourage investment, and erode public trust in security institutions.

To address the worsening security situation, OID called on the Federal Government to intensify efforts through improved intelligence gathering, stronger inter-agency collaboration, increased funding for security operations, and the adoption of modern technology-driven security solutions.

The group argued that emerging security threats require innovative responses, including surveillance technologies, data-driven intelligence systems, and enhanced communication networks capable of supporting rapid emergency responses.

It also renewed calls for the establishment of state police, improved border security management, and comprehensive reforms aimed at empowering local communities to play more active roles in safeguarding their environments.

"The protection of lives and property must remain the foremost responsibility of government at all levels. Nigerians deserve to live, work, and pursue their daily activities without fear of kidnapping, terrorism, banditry, or other criminal threats," the statement emphasized.

Highlighting the importance of collective action, OID stressed that tackling Nigeria’s security challenges requires the cooperation of federal, state, and local governments, as well as security agencies, traditional rulers, religious leaders, community stakeholders, and ordinary citizens.

The group warned that persistent acts of banditry and kidnapping are placing enormous pressure on national unity, peace, and socio-economic stability, urging Nigerians to remain united against criminal elements threatening the country's future.

"Banditry has become a common enemy of all Nigerians. It poses a grave threat to national cohesion, economic growth, and public safety. We must stand together and support efforts aimed at defeating those who seek to destabilize our communities," the statement noted.

Despite the challenges, the organization expressed optimism that ongoing rescue operations would yield positive results and lead to the safe return of the abducted students and teachers.

Reaffirming its commitment to the development of Oyo State and Nigeria as a whole, the Omituntun Initiative in the Diaspora pledged continued support for policies and initiatives that promote peace, security, unity, and sustainable development.

The group concluded by urging citizens to remain vigilant, cooperate with security agencies, and provide credible information that could aid efforts to combat crime and strengthen public safety across the country.
