NDC ANNOUNCED SENATOR GILBERT NNAJI SOUTHEAST COORDINATOR OBI'S CAMPAIGN COUNCIL

Former Enugu East Senator's appointment brings legislative experience, political influence and grassroots leadership to Obi's campaign in the South-East.

ENUGU, NIGERIA — The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has appointed former Senator Gilbert Nnaemeka Nnaji as the South-East Coordinator of its campaign council for Peter Obi, in a strategic move widely seen as an effort to strengthen the party's political structure and consolidate its electoral influence across the region ahead of the 2027 general elections.

In a statement published by the party's National Publicity Secretary Senator Nnaji was named as the southeast coordinator along side : Prof Muhammad Tukur (North East),  Engr. Abubakar Sani (North West) , Chief Asukewe Ikoawaji (South South) , Hon. Kayode Oseni (South West) and Prof Lawal Salihu (North Central )

The appointment brings an experienced political figure with an extensive record of legislative representation, grassroots political engagement and public service into a critical leadership position within the campaign structure.

Senator Nnaji is a prominent political figure from Enugu State whose political career spans local government administration, the House of Representatives and the Nigerian Senate. He previously served as Chairman of Enugu East Local Government Area before representing Enugu East/Isi-Uzo Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives for two terms.

He subsequently represented Enugu East Senatorial District in the Nigerian Senate for two terms, giving him considerable experience in national politics, legislative processes, constituency representation and political mobilisation.

Beyond his political credentials, Nnaji is also regarded as a respected first-class prince in Igbo land, a traditional standing that adds another dimension to his public profile and connections within the South-East's sociocultural and political environment.

A Strategic Appointment with Electoral Implications

The decision to appoint Nnaji is being viewed as more than a routine political designation. It represents a calculated effort by the NDC to place experienced political leadership at the centre of its South-East campaign operations.

The South-East remains a significant political constituency for Peter Obi, whose previous presidential campaigns demonstrated his considerable appeal across the region. However, translating popular support into electoral success requires more than public enthusiasm. It demands effective coordination, established political networks, grassroots mobilisation, strategic communication and the ability to bring different political interests together.

Nnaji's political background provides a combination of these attributes.

Having served at three levels of political leadership, including local government administration, federal legislative representation and the Senate, he brings an understanding of the political structures and relationships that underpin successful electoral campaigns.

His experience could prove particularly valuable in coordinating stakeholders, engaging political leaders, strengthening party structures and building a more cohesive campaign network across the five South-East states.

For the NDC, the appointment also sends a message about its intention to build its campaign around experienced political actors capable of translating political goodwill into organised electoral participation.

Nnaji Pledges Experience and Commitment to Obi's Victory

In his reaction to the appointment, Senator Gilbert Nnaemeka Nnaji expressed appreciation to the party and the campaign leadership for the confidence reposed in him.

He assured the leadership and members of the campaign council of his commitment to deploying his political experience, leadership capacity and established relationships across the South-East to deliver a positive electoral outcome for Mr Peter Obi.

He expressed readiness to work with other stakeholders and campaign leaders to strengthen the movement, coordinate activities and mobilise support for Obi across the region as preparations for the 2027 elections gather momentum.

His assurance underscores the importance of collective responsibility, strategic coordination and sustained grassroots engagement in achieving the campaign's objectives.

A Political Figure with Experience and Regional Connections

Nnaji's emergence comes with an additional political significance considering his recent participation in the NDC's internal political process in Enugu State, where he contested for the party's governorship ticket.

His participation demonstrated his political commitment to the party and its evolving political platform.

Although he did not emerge as the party's governorship candidate, his subsequent appointment to coordinate the South-East campaign reflects the value the party places on his political experience and capacity to contribute to its broader electoral objectives.

It also presents an opportunity for the NDC to harness the experience of established political figures, irrespective of the outcomes of internal contests, in pursuit of a common political objective.
