Explosions heard all over Iran as US strikes ...... Welcome to Glintnews......
A devastating attack by the newly active Lakurawa terror group has left 15 people dead and hundreds of cattle stolen in Mera town, Kebbi State. The group, operating in Sokoto and Kebbi States, struck on Friday afternoon as residents prepared for Jumaat prayers. This incident is the latest in a string of violent attacks plaguing northwestern Nigeria, where insecurity has been on the rise since 2014.
The attack bears the operational footprints of the Boko Haram group, notorious for its previous abductions of schoolgirls in Chibok and Dapchi in northeastern Nigeria. The Lakurawa group's affiliation with jihadi factions in Mali and Niger has heightened security concerns in Nigeria's northwestern region.
Northwestern Nigeria's vulnerability to terrorist attacks can be attributed to several factors. The region's porous borders with Niger, spanning 1,497 km, are poorly policed, allowing for the free flow of arms and terrorists into the country . The difficult terrain, characterized by forest reserves, makes surveillance challenging and provides ideal hiding places for terror groups.
Additionally, arms and weapons trafficking exacerbate the security situation. The illicit proliferation of weapons has a considerable impact on peace and security, increasing the incidence of terrorists' activities in the region .
The Nigerian government's response to the crises has been criticized for being inadequate. The establishment of a committee headed by Muhammad Abubakar, a former inspector-general of police, has yielded little progress.
The Deputy Governor of Kebbi State and the Emir of Argungu, Alhaji Samaila Mera, visited the town to offer condolences to the families of the deceased and reassure the people of their safety. The governor has pledged to ensure the people's protection against further threats from the armed group.
To address the security challenges, experts recommend a multipronged approach, including better-supported border security, improved law enforcement, strategic investments in human and infrastructural development, and concerted local engagement .
