Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki's whereabouts are currently unknown, sparking concerns among the public. Governor-Elect Senator Monday Okpebholo alleged that Obaseki fled Nigeria through land borders ahead of his tenure expiration ¹. Okpebholo is set to be sworn in on Tuesday, which would strip Obaseki of his immunity.
Obaseki had previously claimed that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) planned to arrest him after his tenure ended. However, Okpebholo's media aide, Godspower Inegbe, stated that Obaseki's claims are reckless and have left Edo people worried.
According to Okpebholo, Obaseki reportedly fled Benin City, the Edo State capital, on Friday, using a disguised bus, abandoning governance in the state. Okpebholo also accused Obaseki of mismanaging state funds as governor and making false claims to shift attention from his alleged plan to leave the country.
Okpebholo emphasized that he won the governorship election convincingly and that the tribunal will validate his claims. He warned Obaseki to stop making baseless claims, reminding him that he will soon face the full wrath of the law once his immunity is lifted.
"The Peoples Democratic Party is already challenging the outcome of the election in court... Obaseki's baseless claims will not stand," Okpebholo stated.
As the situation unfolds, concerns about Obaseki's whereabouts and potential consequences remain. The Edo people await clarity on the allegations and the outcome of the tribunal's review of the election results.
