US-Nigeria Joint Offensive Wipes Out Over 200 ISIS Terrorists, Top Commander Killed in Major Counterterrorism Victory
June 10, 2026
In what has been described as a significant breakthrough in the fight against terrorism in West Africa, the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM) has confirmed the elimination of more than 200 ISIS fighters during a coordinated military operation conducted in Northeast Nigeria in partnership with Nigerian authorities.
The operation, which targeted Islamic State-linked terrorist networks operating within the region, reportedly resulted in the death of several high-ranking commanders, including one of the group's most influential leaders, Abu-Bilal al-Minuki.
AFRICOM disclosed the development on Wednesday through an official statement published on its verified X (formerly Twitter) account, describing the mission as a major success in ongoing efforts to dismantle extremist networks threatening regional and international security.
According to the U.S. military command, the operation was executed through close cooperation with Nigerian security forces and was completed without any casualties among American or Nigerian personnel.
“AFRICOM, in continued coordination with Nigeria, conducted operations against ISIS fighters in Northeast Nigeria. No U.S. or Nigerian forces were harmed,” the statement said.
The command further revealed that more than 200 terrorists were neutralized during the offensive, significantly degrading the operational strength of ISIS elements active in the Lake Chad Basin and surrounding areas.
Among those killed was Abu-Bilal al-Minuki, whom AFRICOM identified as a critical figure within the Islamic State terrorist network.
In an accompanying information flyer, the U.S. command described al-Minuki as the financial architect and organizational strategist behind numerous terrorist activities linked to ISIS operations across the region.
“OUR SUCCESSFUL MISSION ELIMINATED SEVERAL KEY ISIS LEADERS TO INCLUDE ABU-BILAL AL-MINUKI,” AFRICOM stated.
Military officials further alleged that the slain commander played a central role in coordinating terrorist financing, recruitment activities, and strategic planning, including plots directed at American interests.
According to AFRICOM, al-Minuki's removal represents a severe setback for the terrorist organization, potentially disrupting its command structure, funding channels, and operational planning capabilities.
Security analysts say the reported elimination of over 200 fighters could mark one of the most significant counterterrorism successes in the region in recent months.
Northeast Nigeria has remained the epicentre of insurgent activities for more than a decade, with extremist groups such as Boko Haram and ISIS-affiliated factions carrying out attacks against civilians, humanitarian workers, and security personnel.
The region has witnessed repeated assaults on communities, military formations, and critical infrastructure, resulting in thousands of deaths and the displacement of millions of residents over the years.
Experts believe sustained military pressure, intelligence-sharing, and international cooperation have increasingly constrained the operational freedom of terrorist groups, although concerns remain over their ability to regroup and launch asymmetric attacks.
As of the time of filing this report, Nigerian military authorities had not released an official statement confirming the details provided by AFRICOM.
However, the announcement comes amid intensified efforts by Nigeria's security agencies and international partners to combat terrorism, insurgency, and cross-border criminal activities across the country's northeastern corridor.
The latest operation underscores the growing collaboration between Nigeria and global security partners in confronting extremist threats that continue to destabilize parts of the region.
The reported success has been welcomed by security observers as a potential turning point in ongoing counterinsurgency operations, particularly given the high-profile nature of the commanders reportedly eliminated.
While authorities caution that the fight against terrorism remains far from over, the destruction of a large number of ISIS fighters and the elimination of a key strategist are expected to weaken the group's operational capacity and reduce its ability to plan and execute attacks in the near term.
For communities that have endured years of violence and insecurity, the operation offers renewed hope that sustained military pressure and international cooperation can help restore stability to Nigeria's troubled Northeast and bring the country closer to ending one of its longest-running security challenges.
