Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has made his stance clear on his political future, emphasizing that he alone will decide on a potential presidential bid in 2027. This statement comes amidst speculation and rumors surrounding his ambitions. Makinde also addressed claims of the ruling party interfering with other political groups to stifle opposition, urging leaders to focus on internal unity and collaboration to strengthen Nigeria .
During the inauguration of the Olusoji Adagunodo Southwest Zonal Secretariat, Makinde stressed the importance of unity within the People's Democratic Party (PDP). He acknowledged past conflicts with Osun Governor Ademola Adeleke but expressed gratitude for Adeleke's presence at the event, demonstrating a commitment to moving forward. Notable figures in attendance included PDP Acting National Chairman Umar Iliya Damagum, former Governors Samuel Ortom (Benue) and Okezie Ikpeazu (Abia), members of the party's National Working Committee, and other regional leaders.
Makinde's message was clear: the upcoming election will be a contest between the ruling party and the Nigerian people. He emphasized the need for opposition leaders to unite their base and let the people speak. The governor also announced the appointment of Soji Adagunodo Jr., the son of the late Olusoji Adagunodo, as his Special Adviser on Regional Integration.
The event marked the inauguration of the Olusoji Adagunodo Southwest Zonal Secretariat, funded personally by Governor Makinde. The secretariat is dedicated to the late Olusoji Adagunodo, a former Southwest PDP chairman.
A WhatsApp group has been established to promote Governor Makinde's potential presidential bid in 2027, with over 467 members, including prominent individuals such as Olajide Odidiomo, a member of the House of Representatives representing Ibadan Northwest/Southwest . However, some critics argue that Makinde's ambition may be "dead on arrival" or that he may not have the necessary support from other regions .
The 2027 presidential election is shaping up to be a highly contested and pivotal moment in Nigerian politics. With various candidates emerging and alliances being formed, the nation waits with bated breath to see who will lead the country forward.
