A tragic petrol tanker explosion occurred in Majiya town, Taura Local Government Area of Jigawa State, resulting in the loss of 147 lives and leaving 72 others hospitalized.
Chairman of Taura Local Government, Shuaibu Hambali, confirmed the incident, describing the scene as "chaotic and despairing."
Eyewitnesses recounted the terrifying moments as people screamed for help amidst the flames. Resident Sani Umar, who narrowly escaped, said, "People were running in all directions, screaming for help. The fire spread quickly, and many couldn't escape."
According to Police Public Relations Officer DSP Lawan Adam, the disaster was triggered by residents scooping spilt petrol after the tanker overturned.
Commissioner of Police AT Abdullahi expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and emphasized the need for public awareness on petrol explosion risks.
Governor Umar Namadi visited the scene, consoling victims and pledging state government support for hospital bills.
President Bola Tinubu sent a delegation, including the Minister of Defence and Transportation, to assess the situation and provide aid.
The Nigeria Governors' Forum and Senate also expressed condolences, calling for improved safety protocols and sensitization.
Minister of Defence Dr. Mohammed Badaru Abubakar and Oil Minister Senator Heineken Lokpobiri extended sympathies, with Lokpobiri directing an investigation into the incident.
