The Department of State Services (DSS) has recorded a significant breakthrough in Nigeria's ongoing fight against banditry and terrorism following the arrest of a suspected arms courier allegedly transporting a cache of dangerous weapons intended for a notorious bandit leader operating in Zamfara State.

The suspect was apprehended during a carefully coordinated intelligence-led operation conducted by DSS operatives in Gezawa Local Government Area of Kano State on Friday, according to an operational report obtained by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Saturday.

Security sources revealed that the arrest followed actionable intelligence which tracked the movement of the suspect as he allegedly transported sophisticated weapons and ammunition from Maigatari Local Government Area of Jigawa State to Funtua in Katsina State, from where the consignment was expected to be delivered to criminal elements linked to armed banditry in the North-West region.

During the operation, DSS operatives recovered a substantial cache of weapons from the suspect. Items seized include three AK-47 assault rifles, four rocket-propelled grenade (RPG) launch tubes complete with warheads, and two empty magazines.

The discovery of RPG launchers among the recovered items has raised fresh concerns among security experts, as such weapons possess significant destructive capabilities and are often associated with highly organized criminal and terrorist networks.

According to the operational report, preliminary investigations have linked the recovered weapons to a suspected bandit kingpin believed to be coordinating violent criminal activities across parts of Zamfara State, one of the regions hardest hit by bandit attacks, kidnappings, cattle rustling, and other forms of armed violence.

Investigators disclosed that the suspect has already made useful confessional statements regarding the mission.

"The suspect confessed that he was contracted to transport the weapons from Maigatari to Funtua and was promised a payment of N450,000 upon successful delivery," the report stated.

Security officials are now intensifying investigations to uncover the full network behind the illicit arms movement, identify financiers and collaborators, and determine how the weapons were acquired and transported across state boundaries without detection.

Authorities believe the arrest could provide critical intelligence capable of exposing broader arms supply chains that have continued to fuel insecurity across the North-West and other parts of the country.

The DSS described the operation as a major setback for criminal groups that rely on a steady flow of weapons and ammunition to sustain attacks on communities, security personnel, and travelers.

The agency noted that disrupting logistics and supply networks remains one of the most effective strategies in weakening bandit groups and reducing their operational capacity.

The suspect remains in DSS custody and is expected to face further interrogation before being charged in accordance with relevant provisions of Nigerian law.

Meanwhile, security agencies have reiterated their commitment to sustaining intelligence-driven operations across the country aimed at dismantling criminal networks involved in arms trafficking, terrorism financing, kidnapping, and other forms of organized crime.
