According to State Police Public Relations Officer Joshua Ukandu, the accident involved a fully-loaded commercial bus traveling from Enugu. The bus crashed and burst into flames after hitting an obstacle in the middle of the night, resulting in unimaginable destruction.

"The bus was traveling from Enugu when it hit an obstacle and caught fire," Ukandu confirmed to journalists in Abakaliki. "We have confirmed five fatalities, and seven others are receiving treatment at Alex Ekwueme Federal University Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki."

The injured victims are currently undergoing medical care, while the remains of the deceased have been deposited in the mortuary. Ukandu noted that investigations are ongoing to determine the exact cause of the accident.

"This is a tragic loss of life, and our thoughts are with the families of the deceased," Ukandu said. "We wish speedy recovery to those injured and will work tirelessly to ensure that justice is served."

The incident has raised concerns about road safety in Nigeria, particularly on major highways. Experts are calling for improved infrastructure, stricter vehicle maintenance regulations, and enhanced emergency response systems.

Eyewitnesses described the scene as "horrific," with flames engulfing the bus and passengers trapped inside. "It was like a nightmare," said one witness. "We tried to help, but the fire was too intense."
