Midnight Raid at NIPSS Jos Leaves Police Officer, Two Others Dead
June 16, 2026
Residents and staff of the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), Kuru, near Jos in Plateau State, were thrown into panic after heavily armed gunmen launched a daring late-night attack on Nigeria's foremost policy and leadership training institution, leaving at least three people dead, including a police officer and another security operative.
The attack, which occurred on Monday night, has intensified concerns over the worsening security situation in Nigeria, particularly as the assailants targeted one of the country's most strategic institutions that regularly hosts top government officials, military commanders, senior civil servants, academics, and policymakers.
According to eyewitnesses and staff members, the attackers arrived under the cover of darkness and engaged security personnel in a fierce gun battle as they attempted to breach the institute's premises.
One staff member, who spoke on condition of anonymity, described the terrifying moments that unfolded during the attack.
"I was asleep when I suddenly heard multiple gunshots. At first, I was confused and didn't know what was happening. But within minutes, panic spread across the entire NIPSS community as everyone realised that the institution was under attack," the source said.
The staff member disclosed that security operatives immediately mounted a strong resistance, preventing the gunmen from gaining access to the facility.
"Thankfully, security was reinforced quickly, and the attackers were forced to retreat. However, before fleeing, they succeeded in killing two security personnel stationed at the gate. A soldier and a police officer were among the victims. It is a very unfortunate incident," the source added.
Another source familiar with the incident revealed that three people eventually lost their lives during the assault, including a police officer and another officer attached to the institute's security team.
According to the source, the prompt intervention of security agencies averted what could have become a far more devastating attack.
"The swift response of security forces prevented the gunmen from penetrating deeper into the facility and causing greater destruction," the source said.
The incident has sparked fresh concerns over the vulnerability of critical national institutions amid the country's persistent security challenges.
Established as Nigeria's premier policy and strategic research institution, NIPSS serves as a training ground for senior government officials, military officers, diplomats, business leaders, and policymakers, making it one of the country's most sensitive national assets.
In an official statement issued on Tuesday, the institute confirmed that a security incident occurred near its premises but assured the public that the situation had been brought under control.
The statement, signed by the Head of Public Affairs Department, Osime Samuel, stated that security personnel and relevant agencies responded swiftly to neutralise the threat.
"The situation was promptly brought under control through the swift response of security personnel and relevant security agencies. There is currently no threat to the safety of participants, staff, residents, or facilities of the Institute, and normal activities are continuing as scheduled," the statement read.
NIPSS further disclosed that security agencies had commenced investigations to determine the circumstances surrounding the attack and urged the public to avoid speculation while investigations continue.
"NIPSS is working closely with the appropriate authorities and will provide verified information as soon as it becomes available. We urge members of the public and the media to rely on official communications from the Institute and relevant security agencies," the statement added.
The management also commended the professionalism displayed by security personnel during the operation and reaffirmed its commitment to protecting members of the institute's community.
"The management remains committed to the safety and security of all members of the Institute community and appreciates the professionalism of the security personnel and agencies involved in the response. Further updates will be communicated in due course," it said.
The latest attack comes amid growing fears over Nigeria's deteriorating security landscape, with communities across several states grappling with recurring incidents of banditry, terrorism, kidnappings, and deadly attacks by armed groups.
Security analysts have repeatedly warned that attacks on strategic national institutions could have far-reaching implications for national stability and public confidence in the country's security architecture.
As investigations continue, many Nigerians are calling for stronger security measures around critical government facilities to prevent future attacks and safeguard institutions considered vital to national development and governance.
