Panic in Benin: Gunmen Abduct Woman at Busy Vegetable Market Along Airport Road

Benin City, Edo State — Fear and anxiety gripped traders and shoppers on Sunday after armed men reportedly stormed the popular Vegetable Market along Airport Road in Benin City and abducted a woman in broad daylight, leaving witnesses traumatized and raising fresh concerns about security in the state.

According to eyewitness accounts, the victim had visited the bustling market with her husband and children shortly after attending a church service when the incident occurred.

Witnesses said the family was shopping among dozens of traders and customers when a group of armed men suddenly arrived and carried out the operation in what observers described as a swift and coordinated manner.

The assailants reportedly moved directly toward the woman before forcefully taking her away, causing panic and confusion within the market. Traders and customers were said to have fled for safety as the incident unfolded.

Several eyewitnesses claimed that the gunmen appeared to have targeted the woman specifically, although the motive behind the operation remains unclear.

Witness Recounts Harrowing Experience

A video recorded shortly after the incident and seen by journalists captured the emotional testimony of a woman who claimed she witnessed the abduction firsthand.

Visibly shaken and showing what appeared to be bruises sustained during the chaos, the witness described the experience as one of the most frightening moments of her life.

According to her, the incident shattered the belief held by some residents that kidnapping and violent crimes are uncommon within Benin City.

"Today, for the first time in my life, I witnessed a kidnapping. People keep saying kidnapping does not happen in Benin, but it happened right before my eyes at the Vegetable Market along Airport Road," she said.

The witness further revealed that she became caught up in the confusion while trying to protect the victim's children from harm.

"I helped save the woman's children. We were buying things from the same area of the market when everything happened. I sustained injuries in the process. You can see the bruises on my body and legs," she said.

Her emotional account has since circulated widely on social media, generating public concern and renewed debate about security challenges in urban centers.

Police Confirm Incident

The Edo State Police Command has confirmed that a woman was forcibly taken from the market but cautioned against prematurely categorizing the incident as kidnapping.

Speaking on the development, the Police Public Relations Officer, Eno Ikoedem, said authorities were already investigating the matter.

"I am aware that there was an abduction incident in that area earlier today, and we have commenced investigations," she stated.

According to the police spokesperson, the victim had gone to the market with her husband and children after church service when she was taken away by unidentified individuals.

While declining to disclose details that could compromise ongoing investigations, Ikoedem assured the public that security agencies were working diligently to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.

"For now, we cannot release certain information to the public because investigations are still ongoing. At the appropriate time, we will provide further details. The husband and other family members are cooperating fully with investigators," she said.

Why Police Are Calling It an Abduction

The police spokesperson also addressed questions regarding the distinction between "abduction" and "kidnapping."

According to her, investigators have not yet received any indication that the perpetrators have contacted the victim's family to demand ransom, which is often associated with kidnapping cases.

"It is an abduction and not kidnapping. Have the abductors contacted the family demanding ransom? If you have any information suggesting otherwise, kindly provide it," she said.

Her remarks suggest that investigators are still working to determine the motive behind the incident and whether it was financially motivated, targeted, or linked to other circumstances yet to be uncovered.

Growing Security Concerns

The incident has heightened concerns among residents of Benin City, particularly traders and business owners who operate in crowded commercial centers.

Many residents expressed alarm that such an operation could occur in broad daylight at one of the city's busiest markets, despite the presence of large numbers of people.

Security analysts note that attacks carried out in public places often create heightened fear because they demonstrate the willingness of criminal elements to operate openly and with apparent confidence.

The latest incident also comes amid ongoing efforts by law enforcement agencies to curb violent crime and strengthen security across Edo State.

Investigation Ongoing

As of the time of this report, the whereabouts of the victim remain unknown, and no arrests have been announced in connection with the incident.

Authorities have urged members of the public with useful information to come forward and assist investigators.

Meanwhile, the victim's family continues to await answers as security agencies intensify efforts to determine the motive behind the abduction and secure her safe return.

The incident has left traders, residents, and community leaders demanding stronger security measures to prevent similar occurrences and restore public confidence in the safety of commercial and public spaces across the state.
