Tragedy Strikes Ibadan Carnival: Many Children Feared Dead in Stampede

A devastating stampede occurred during a carnival in Ibadan, Nigeria, resulting in the loss of many young lives. The tragic incident happened at the Islamic High School, Bashorun, Ibadan, where a former wife of the Ooni of Ife had organized the event.

Eyewitnesses reported that the carnival had been proceeding smoothly until the distribution of gifts, which attracted a massive crowd of over 3,000 children to the venue. The venue, which had a capacity for 500 children, was severely overcrowded, leading to a chaotic situation.

As the children surged forward to receive their gifts, a stampede ensued, resulting in many children falling and struggling to get back to their feet. The exact number of casualties is still unknown, but a source close to the incident estimated that nearly 20 children lost their lives.

A viral video circulating on social media platforms showed the harrowing scene, with children being carried away from the surging crowd. The footage is a grim reminder of the tragic events that unfolded during the carnival.

The Oyo State Government has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic loss of lives and has swiftly responded to the situation. Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Prince Dotun Oyelade, confirmed the incident and stated that the state government had mobilized a rapid response team to provide assistance.

Oyelade said, "The state government swiftly mobilised a rapid response team following the breaking of the incident. Victims have been swiftly transported to various hospitals within the Ibadan metropolis for medical attention."

The injured children were rushed to nearby hospitals, including Patnas Hospital, Basorun, Western Hospital, Basorun, Ringroad State Hospital, Molly Specialist Hospital, and University College Hospital. Unfortunately, some of the injured children were confirmed dead on arrival, while doctors are still battling to save others.

The state government has clarified that it was not involved in the planning or logistics of the private event and has stressed the need for proper coordination and safety measures for events involving children and vulnerable groups.

As the people of Ibadan mourn the loss of young lives, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of prioritizing safety and security at public events. The Oyo State Government has promised to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident and to take necessary measures to prevent such tragedies in the future.
