"Tricycle Union Leadership Crisis Deepens in Enugu: Allegations of Hijack and Extortion"

A leadership crisis is gripping the Tricycle Union in Enugu State, Nigeria, with allegations of hijacking and extortion leveled against State Chairman Kingsley Edeh and his secretary. The controversy centers on the One Day, Agbani Road unit, which has gone 13 years without an election.

Members accuse Edeh of imposing a caretaker government, extorting unit members, and ignoring election pleas. The imposed government's tenure expires October 22, 2024, with no signs of election or power transition. This has sparked fears of a breakdown in law and order.

In a petition document obtained from the Enugu State Ministry of Transport, members of the One Day unit expressed alarm over Edeh's actions. They lamented the lack of elections and the state chairman's refusal to conduct polls despite repeated requests.

Official letters have been written to Edeh, the electoral committee, the commissioner for transport, and other necessary agencies, including law enforcement, pleading and notifying them of the impending danger.

Units like Timber, whose tenure expires on December 31, have conducted elections and are preparing for a peaceful transition. This disparity has fueled concerns among union members.

Edeh has allegedly threatened some members, claiming ties to the Nigeria police and DSS, and vowing to arrest anyone challenging his authority. He calls the extortion a "business" that no one can stop.

Recall that Edeh has arrested several state executive members, including the vice chairman, who questioned his authority and detained them at the state CID.

Human rights organizations have called on the Honorable Commissioner of Police to investigate alleged abuse of office by some officers favoring politicians and businessmen.

To resolve the crisis, union members are calling for immediate elections in the One Day unit to ensure democratic leadership. They also demand an investigation into allegations of extortion and leadership hijack, prevention of imposition of caretaker governments in other units, and peaceful transition of power in units whose tenure is expiring.

The Enugu State Government and relevant agencies must address these concerns to prevent a breakdown in law and order and ensure the Tricycle Union's continued effectiveness.

The union plays a vital role in Enugu's transportation system, providing intra-urban services to residents. The current crisis threatens to undermine the union's effectiveness and credibility.

As tensions rise, the Enugu State Government must act swiftly to resolve the crisis and restore stability.

The people of Enugu State await a resolution to this crisis, hoping for a return to normalcy and democratic governance within the Tricycle Union.
