Iran's Foreign Ministry Spokesman, Esmaeil Baghaei, has strongly criticized the United States' deployment of B-52 bombers in the region, labeling it a "destabilizing presence" . The US military announced the deployment on Saturday, citing the need to deter Iran and its proxies . This move comes after Iran vowed to retaliate against Israeli strikes on its military sites on October 26.
The recent escalation began with Israel's attack on Iranian military sites, which was in response to an Iranian missile barrage on October 1. The barrage itself was a retaliation for the killing of Iran-backed militant leaders and a Revolutionary Guards commander . At least four soldiers were killed in the strikes, and a civilian was also reported dead.
Baghaei emphasized that Iran's response would be "definite and decisive" and reaffirmed the country's commitment to defending itself . He also expressed support for initiatives promoting a ceasefire in Gaza and Lebanon, where Israel is currently engaged in conflict with Iran-backed Hamas and Hezbollah.
The US deployment of B-52 bombers is seen as a demonstration of its commitment to regional security, despite Iran's criticism of US presence. The bombers, along with an additional squadron of F-15E Strike Eagles and aerial refueling tankers, are intended to compensate for the upcoming departure of the USS Abraham Lincoln carrier strike group .
Iran's President, Masoud Pezeshkian, boasted that Iran possesses missiles capable of deterring Israel from attacking, stating, "We have missiles so Israel wouldn't dare attack us" . This statement comes amidst tensions surrounding Israel's targeting of Iran's defense capabilities and missile production.
The US military has taken several steps to strengthen its posture in the region, including the deployment of a Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) ballistic missile defense system to Israel, along with nearly 100 US troops to operate it . Additionally, a fresh squadron of F-16s and KC-46 Pegasus tankers have been deployed to the Middle East.
As tensions continue to escalate, the international community remains vigilant, awaiting Iran's response to the recent developments. The US has made it clear that it will take every measure necessary to defend its people and interests in the region
